Rajiv Gandhi Equity Savings Scheme

Rajiv Gandhi Equity Savings Scheme (RGESS) was first introduced by our former finance minister Mr. P Chidambaram on 21st September 2012 and named after our former Prime Minister Late Mr. Rajiv Gandhi. The scheme was further modified in year 2013. The scheme was aimed to encourage flow of savings of the small investors into domestic capital markets.

  • The Scheme improves the depth of domestic capital markets and also promotes an ‘equity culture’ in India. 
  • It is exclusively for the first time retail investors in securities market.
  • This Scheme would give tax benefits to new investors who invest up to Rs. 50,000 and whose annual income is below Rs. 12 lakh.

  • A resident of India.
  • Having a gross total income for the financial year less than or equal to Rs. 12 Lakh.

राजीव गांधी इक्विटी सेविंग स्कीम (RGESS) को सबसे पहले हमारे पूर्व वित्त मंत्री श्री पी। चिदंबरम ने 21 सितंबर 2012 को शुरू किया था और इसका नाम हमारे पूर्व प्रधानमंत्री स्वर्गीय श्री राजीव गांधी के नाम पर रखा गया था। इस योजना को वर्ष 2013 में और संशोधित किया गया था। इस योजना का उद्देश्य छोटे निवेशकों को घरेलू पूंजी बाजार में बचत को प्रोत्साहित करना था।

यह योजना घरेलू पूंजी बाजारों की गहराई में सुधार करती है और भारत में एकइक्विटी संस्कृतिको भी बढ़ावा देती है। यह विशेष रूप से प्रतिभूति बाजार में पहली बार खुदरा निवेशकों के लिए है। यह योजना उन नए निवेशकों को कर लाभ प्रदान करेगी जो 50,000 रुपये तक निवेश करते हैं और जिनकी वार्षिक आय 12 लाख रुपये से कम है।


The investor would get 50% deduction of the amount invested during the year. upto a maximum investment of Rs.50,000 per financial year. from his/her taxable income for that year. for three consecutive assessment years.

  • It provides additional tax benefits over and above the present tax savings schemes under the Income Tax Act.
  • Gains, arising of investments in RGESS, can realized after a year. This is in contrast to all other tax saving instruments.
  • Investments allowed to made in installments in the year in which the tax claims filed.
  • The benefits can availed for three consecutive years.
  • Dividend payments are tax free.
  • This scheme has a long run benefit of educating the retail investment segment and thereby moving towards financial inclusivity in the country.
  • Success of this scheme can lead to transfer of assets from traditional savings instruments such as bank deposits and FDs to the capital markets, leading to diversification in retail investor portfolio and also leading to more productive “capital formation” assets.
